প্রসঙ্গ; কঠিন চীবর দান

পুরনো ইতিহাস

তথাগত বুদ্ধ যখন ভিক্ষু-সঙ্ঘ গঠন করেছিলেন তখন সাধারণ মানুষের দেয়া যেকোনো কিছু গ্রহণ করতে ভিক্ষুদের বারণ করেছিলেন। তার মধ্যে ভিক্ষুদের পরনের চীবর বা কাপরও। ভিক্ষুগণ শ্মশানঘাট, রাস্তা, বনজঙ্গল থেকে পুরনো কাপরের অংশ সংগ্রহ করে তা জোরা লাগিয়ে পড়তো।

দিনে দিনে ভিক্ষু সংখ্যা বাড়তে লাগলো, তখন ভিক্ষুদের পরনের কাপরের অভাব দেখা দিলো। ভিক্ষুদের এমন দুর্দশা দেখে সাধারণ মানুষের মনে মায়া জন্মালো। অবস্থার পারিপার্শ্বিকতা বিবেচনা করে তখন বুদ্ধ সাধারন মানুষের থেকে পরনের কাপর গ্রহণ করার অনুমতি দিলো। শর্ত দিলো, বর্ষা কালের তিন মাস এক স্থানে অবস্থান করতে হবে, করে ধ্যান-সাধনা করে মুক্তি লাভের চেষ্টা  করতে হবে, যাতে লোকজন ভিক্ষুদের মন্দ না বলতে পারে, আর এক বছরে একজন ভিক্ষু একটি মাত্র চীবর গ্রহণ করতে পারবে।

তথাগত বুদ্ধের বাল্যকালের বন্ধু এবং ব্যক্তিগত চিকিৎসক জীবক প্রথম বারের মতো ভিক্ষুসঙ্ঘকে চীবর দান করেছিলেন বলে ইতিহাসে উল্লেখ আছে।

বর্তমান ইতিহাস

প্রায় ২৬০০ বছর পুরনো এই ঐতিহ্য আজও যথাযথ সম্মান আর মর্যাদার সাথে পালিত হয়ে আসছে, এবং পালিত হবে। পৃথিবীর প্রতিটি বৌদ্ধ প্রধান দেশে এবং সমাজে প্রবারনা পূর্ণিমা দিন থেকে এক মাস যাবত এই কঠিন চীবর দান পালন করে থাকে।

"আমাদের বিহারের কঠিন চীবর দান"- সবার কাছে এটি একটি অতি পরিচিত বাক্য। প্রবারনার দিন থেকে এক মাস প্রত্যেক বৌদ্ধ গ্রামে বিহারে যেন মহা- উৎসব।  পরিবার পরিজনের চলে মিলন-মেলা। ছোট ছেলে-মেয়েরা পায় নতুন পোশাক। সবাই এই দিনটির জন্য অপেক্ষা করে থাকে কবে আসবে আবার এই কঠিন চীবর দান!

আমরা বৌদ্ধ ধর্মে বিশ্বাসী। সারা পৃথিবীতে বৌদ্ধ ধর্মের সম্মান কদর অনেক বেশি। কেন? আমাদের বৌদ্ধদের জ্ঞান আর বিচক্ষণতার জন্য। আমাদের ভালোবাসা আর মায়া-মমতার জন্য। এখন কঠিন চীবর দান প্রসঙ্গে আসি। আমাদের বর্তমান বৌদ্ধ সমাজে বিহারকেন্দ্রিক কঠিন চীবর দান নিয়ে এত বারাবারি, আমার কাছে বেশি বারাবারি বলেই মনে হয়। এটা আমার একটা সামান্য পর্যবেক্ষণ মাত্র। আগেই বলেছি যত মত তত পথ।


ছোটবেলায় এক ভিক্ষুর লেখা একটি বই পরেছিলাম, তিনি  প্রশ্ন- উত্তর পর্বে লিখেছিলেন বৌদ্ধদের বড় ধর্মীয় উৎসব হল কঠিন চীবর দান। এটা ভুল। সঠিক উত্তর হল শুভ বৈশাখী পূর্ণিমা। এখন নিজেকে নিজে প্রশ্ন করেন একজন ভিক্ষু হয়ে কিভাবে এত বড় ভুল করেন? উত্তর একটাই, এই কঠিন চীবর দান নিয়ে এত বারাবারি বলেই এত বড় মস্ত ভুল করি আমরা, আমাদের ছেলেমেয়েরাও করে, ভবিষ্যতেও করবে।

কঠিন চীবর দানের মতো এমন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ একটা দিন যা কিনা হই-হুল্লুর আর অপ্রয়োজনীয় কাজে অপচয় করা হয়। মন্ত্রি-মিনিস্তারদের স্বাগত জানানো, এলাকার এম্পি চেয়ারম্যান, বড় দানবীর বড়ুয়া শিল্পপতি, চাটগাইয়া বড় ভান্তে, আরও কত কি??!!!!! এখন বলেন, এত কিছু করার পর কঠিন চীবর দানের মহত্ত্ব রইল কই? সাধারণ  ধর্মপ্রাণ মানুষ কি বলেন?

নীতি-নিয়মের মারপ্যাঁচ

আমরা সবাই জানি যে ভিক্ষু জীবন যাপনের অনেক নীতি-নিয়ম আছে, তা মেনে চলতে হয়। আর তারই ধারাবাহিকতা এই চীবর দান অনুষ্ঠান। এটা প্রধানত ভিক্ষুসঙ্ঘের অনুষ্ঠান, তবুও গৃহীরা এতে অংশ গ্রহণ করে অনেক পুণ্য সঞ্চয় করার সুযোগ পায়। ধর্ম চর্চা করার এই এক সময়। আগেই উল্লেখ করেছিলাম যে তথাগত বুদ্ধ শর্ত দিয়ে ছিলেন একজন ভিক্ষু একটি মাত্র চীবর গ্রহণ করতে পারবেন। কিন্তু আমরা দেখি অনেক নামি-দামি ভিক্ষুগণ ও একের অধিক চীবর গ্রহণএবং বহান করেন। কেউ কিচ্ছু বলেন না!

কঠিন চীবর দান দীর্ঘজীবী হউক

বারাবারি, বাহাদুরি আর নীতি- নিয়মের মারপ্যাঁচের মধ্যে না পরে আসুন আমরা যথাযথ ভাবে আমাদের এই দিনটি পালন করি, এই অপূর্ব মুহূর্ত যেন অপচয় না করি। পরিবার- পরিজন, ছেলে-মেয়ে, নাতি- নাতনি, সমাজ, আর গ্রামবাসীদের নিয়ে আসুন আমরা এই দিনটি পূর্ণ ধর্মীয় ভাবনা দিয়ে পালন করি। আমি জানি আমাদের সমাজে অনেক পরিবর্তন এসেছে, মানুষজন অনেক শিক্ষিত, পকেটে পয়সা আছে, নতুন নতুন চিন্তাধারা আছে, সেজন্য মূল আদর্শ বিকৃত করে কিছু করতে হবে, সেটা বুদ্দিমানের কাজ নয়।

কঠিন চীবর দানের মতো একটি দিন আমাদের জীবন এবং ভবিষ্যৎ প্রজন্মের জন্য খুবই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। আসুন সবাই মিলে এই ঐতিহ্যটাকে টিকিয়ে রাখি, আর প্রার্থনা করি কঠিন চীবর দান দীর্ঘজীবী হউক।

My apologies for delay. I also was engaged with my travels and studies. Last year the ordination project program was pretty good how ever I had a feeling that didn't organize the program well. I have received the ordination pictures just recently. They did not take appropriate photos of the entire program but some

photos I got just enough to prove that the ordination ceremonies were successful.

I'm grateful to every one who helped me for this projects unconditionally, the merits are

earned so one day they will be supportive on your journey to Nibbana.

The Project



Introduction

Welcome to the introduction of our Kūlaputta Pabbajjā project. The organization SAVE THE SOCIETY is pleased to announce about 35 Kūlaputtas will be ordained in Comilla (Bangladesh) on 25th of December, 2010.

Kūlaputta Pabbajjam is a pure Buddhist traditional Pāli phrase. Kūla means family, folks, or kin, and Putta means son. Here Kūlaputta means the son of noble family. The Buddha often used to say His disciples (Monks) were His sons, born from His mouth, from the teaching. Pabbajjā means the renunciation or giving up of worldly life. When a male person is born in a Buddhist family, it is his family's responsibility to let him be ordained at least once in his life. It is a custom, considered a rare opportunity, a chance to earn great merit. And the parents or supporters are considered as Sāsana Dāyaka (or supporters of the Buddha’s Sāsana).

Many Buddhist families in Bangladesh are not performing their noble duties in a proper way because of a lack of self-awareness, proper education, and poverty. SAVE THE SOCIETY is looking after those families and “doing, what needs to be done.”


The Purpose


This is a noble purpose, a universal purpose. Many Buddhist families in Bangladesh, mostly in the countryside, can’t afford the expenditures necessary for their sons' ordination ceremonies. Because of this, the children of the Buddhist families in Bangladesh lack in their moral education, self-awareness, tradition, and social wellbeing. They do not have the proper guidance. SAVE THE SOCIETY is finding the children of those families who don't have enough support and helping them in this noble purpose. We believe that the future, the beauty, and the longevity of the Buddha’s Dhamma is in their hands.


Place


These great ordination ceremonies will be held at Sāntiniketana Vihāra, Comilla, Bangladesh. Comilla is a district situated south-east of Bangladesh, about 180 Kms from the capital city Dhaka. This place was the kingdoms of Pāla and Sena Dynasties; they were devoted Buddhist kings (300 BC to 1300 AD). In the present time, about 25 thousands Buddhists are living and scattered in about 20 villages. About 20/25 monks are living in 12 monasteries supported by the local Buddhists. Sāntiniketana Vihāra is the oldest and largest temple with about 400 supportive Buddhist families.


Duration


The ordination ceremonies and intensive training will last for 10 days.


After this great occasion and intensive training they will be awarded for their noble performance. This is considered a temporary ordination. If some would like to continue their monkhood, they will be accepted by the local temples. The organization will keep supporting them morally, educationally, and physically (with things like healthcare).


Why there is no female ordination



There is no discrimination based on gender, caste, or religion in this project or in this practice. It's simply that there is no nun monastery in this area to be found, and no one can be found there who also has any experience of being a nun or teaching nuns. We apologize for this, and SAVE THE SOCIETY would be grateful and proud to coordinate or help in any way any organization or person willing to introduce Nun ordination in this area, to teach and to support.

Praggananda Scholarship

Nanda is always looking for ways to 'give back' for all the help and support he received during his education. His latest project is a good example of 'giving back'. The Praggananda Scholarship for the poorest of children in his home town and surrounding area. These would be children who couldn't afford to continue their education or maybe couldn't even begin school. It was for children between the ages of 5 and 16 years old.

Save the Society volunteers canvased Comilla, Bangledesh and the surrounding area for applicants. Nanda had decided that 12 applicants was all that Save the Society could handle, but he received 13, so that was the number he ended up with. The applications were mostly from the children of poor farmers, even one whose father had died 4 years ago, and with three people in her family, they had no income at all. When the applications finally arrived, Nanda began to share the story with his friends and our meditation group. Our meditation group decided to give our donations toward this project. Then several of us wanted to sponsor one child ourselves. With a donation of $50.00 we could help a child go to school for one year. Nanda then gave us each a profile of a child with a picture of them Seeing the child who would benifit from this small donation made me feel that I was really helping a child and so much more aware of how lucky the children in developed countries are to have the opportunity to go to school with very little cost. We tend to take education for granted, along with a lot of other things.

What a great project, and what a great opportunity to take part in helping children.
